Commentary

Born in Pennsylvania, Cassatt spent most of her career in Paris, where she exhibited with the impressionists. A feminist, Cassatt celebrated womanhood and became renowned for portraits of mothers and children, modern secular takes on the archetypal religious image of the Madonna and Child. Depicted in both domestic interiors and outdoor settings, her women and children enjoy tender, quiet moments of everyday life. In Mother and Child in Boat, the mother appears nurturing, gently holding her daughter’s hand as she dips her toe into the water.
